How to Stop Resisting Your Story and Start Embracing it
I won’t lie, it was painful.
Liberating myself from my own resistances to tell my story was one of the hardest things I’ve done. But I’m living proof that it can be done: you can stop resisting your story and start embracing.
What does resisting your story mean?
It starts with questions like:
- Who should I trust with my story?
- How do I know what to share?
- What will people think?
And before you know it you are procrastinating writing about yourself or you start hating talking about yourself or even you let other people introduce yourself. But deep inside you feel uncomfortable, unsatisfied, un-authentic.
When I say you, I mean you the kick-ass entrepreneur with a purpose-driven idea that’s changing the world.
If you are not familiar with my approach to business storytelling, you might be thinking: “what do you mean “deep insideâ€? Isn’t business storytelling about what I do?â€
No my dear, it’s not. That’s something everybody can share.
I can tell you what I do: coach ambitious purpose-driven underestimated entrepreneurs into leveraging their stories for their marketing material; I do that through online sessions of sixty minutes each. Done.
That’s not your job as a storyteller.
As a business storyteller, you have to tell me why you do what you do every single day. And that’s something you only can share.
Mind my words, I’m not talking about why as in: “I do storytelling coaching to change the worldâ€.
But why as in “I felt underrepresented when I was growing up a black young girl in Italy and I don’t want any girl to feel that ever again. I love business, I used to make business deals with my dad since I was eight, I love stories so storytelling coaching of women entrepreneurs is how I do it.â€
That’s the story you want to tell.
And trust me, I didn’t wake up one day and figured that all out. It took time, pain, resistance, insistence, guidance, push, tears, reflections, mistakes.
But it was all worth it.
I’ve embraced my story, which is why I know how you can stop resisting yours.
How to stop resisting your story and start embracing it
1. Get everything out
Take a few minutes every day to jot down your thoughts about your story
2. Share with yourself first
How would you share your story to yourself? We often are our stricter judges but be kind to yourself, understand your path and explain that to yourself
3. Stop caring
Stop caring about what everyone else is thinking about your story because it really doesn’t matter
4. Start caring
Start caring about the people who will be touched by your story, you might change their lives
5. Do something different
Trying out a new experience can have a revelatory effect but can also bring back elements from your story
6. Talk to a stranger
Sharing your story with a stranger decreases tension, stress and allows you to see things from a different perspective
The journey might be painful and uncomfortable but you wouldn’t trade the results for anything in the world, trust me.
