About me page. That’s all you can read on the screen of your computer. And you have tried to fill in the blank page but like a forgotten word on the tip of your tongue, nothing comes out.

Have you ever felt this way?

Don’t worry, you are not alone. And I don’t have the statics with me (although, I’m working on it) but I can tell you from what my clients have experienced, it is a common situation.

And I’ve been there.

I was once a PR, a journalist and a documentarist, a consultant and trainer, a founder, and now storyteller coach. And for all those personas throughout my career, I had a website or social media platform requiring me to describe who I am.

You can imagine how many times my “about me” page content had to be changed!

So believe me when I tell you, I know how it feels to have your fingers paralyzed by the apparently silly inability of writing down who you are.

In fact, there’s nothing silly about it. Because our about me page, is charged with way more than it should.

Why do we get stuck on the about me page?

1. You are giving it more value than it has

Asking to fill in an about page completely from scratch might feel like answering the dramatic question: “who am I? Where am I going?”

Of course that’s going to be overwhelming and impossible to answer. Firstly, because it requires an enormous amount of mental effort. Secondly, because you might just try to figure it out while you continue your entrepreneurial journey.

If we could give a little less emotional weight to the about me page and focus on what people we want to serve, should know about us, the whole process would be lighter.

2. You are not telling a story

Your “about me” page is your chance to guide the reader through what drove you to a specific business. Oftentimes we forget about that and compile a CV-like, kilometric page instead of telling a story. And then we feel bad because our about me page doesn’t sound authentic, original and personalized. Start with a story.

3. You think the page is written on stone

I hate to break it to you but it’s 2020, nothing you put on your website is set on stone. Not even your about page: you are free to modify it, add photos, choose a template and then come back the day after with a completely changed idea. Just because you are filling in your about page doesn’t mean you are writing your story forever and it can never be changed again. Many entrepreneurs go through a complete makeover and their “about me” page, changes with them. Realize that what you write today, can be changed tomorrow.

4. You are underestimating yourself

Did you think something like “my story is not that important”? You are wrong: you are the star, the main character, the lead actor in the story of your business. And the people who want your services, your products, want to connect to you, trust you. Your story is going to allow that. You can only connect with them if you share a bit of you.

5. You don’t start writing

That’s the ultimate sin: staring at the blank page and not typing a single word. Look, whatever shape you want to give to your about me page, you have to start somewhere, focus being on starting. Write a word, a sentence, symbols, or even “I have no idea where to start from”. Because progress only comes from action.

I hope you’ll be kind enough to share your about page, even a draft, with me. And if I can be of service, I’m one phone call away.
