So far in our trip with (IN)VISIBLE CITIES, churches have never failed. These are some the places where migrants gather at least once a week, they create the community. Some of them are hidden gems, others have just been created, some have crowds from early in the morning until late at lunch time. We experienced that in Los Angeles and Cardiff during our quest to portray African migrants in a different way from the traditional one used by the media. A unique case was the Ethiopian orthodox Church in LA, where extremely welcoming people were gathering from as soon as 5am to lunch time: praying, giving updates on who died who went away, eating and just enjoying a day off. It’s happening in Istanbul as well where we are at the moment recounting the stories of African migrants. So if you’re looking for us today, try one church around Taksim square, you’ll find us there.
